The flux switching
machine makes an excellent generator suited to operation over a wide speed
range. The simple laminated steel rotor requires no magnets, windings or
slip rings. The stator contains both the field winding and the armature
winding. The alternating armature voltage is converted to dc using a
power electronic converter. This dc voltage can be controlled to be
independent of load and speed. The dynamic control of field and armature
excitation is very fast such that the generator voltage can be regulated close
to required values despite step changes in load. The simple rotor makes the flux switching generator ideal for use in very high speed generation systems driven directly by gas turbine engines. Technelec has verified the design of flux switching generators up to 20,000 r/min and have completed designs for generators running at 50,000 r/min. An output inverter converts the generator's output dc voltage to the required alternating voltage and frequency. |
